Overview - Insight - Impact

If only … you had a thorough understanding of the situation and could act best accordingly. Overview – insight – impact is a simple structure to do exactly this. Spending time in the overview phase first to create an overview of all the information, assets and resources you have and add missing elements. The insights phase to get the correct insights, conclusions from this overview and -finally- to prioritise actions based on that.

Going through distinct phases will help collect enough information and data to get the right insights and to create the correct insights to eventually act on. Often, the overview and insight phases are rushed to do things as soon as possible or too much time is spent in the overview phase to have exhaustive data or too much time is spent in the insights phase to create the “perfect” insights.

Overview

Creating an overview is mainly about collecting all assets, sources you have or need, find missing elements and preparing for the moment you will actually have to create insights.

E.g. interviewing enough customers to get a full overview of their needs, for example with a simple empathy map to eventually create a full empathy map.
E.g. what does this process look like? What are the different steps? Who is involved?

Insight

This phase is about browsing through all collected information, data, assets and resources to be able to devise the right next steps.

E.g. what is the key customer need?
E.g. what part of the process we just mapped in the overview phase causes the most problems?

Impact

What are the best actions in what order to make things better? What will have the most impact?

E.g. we can make this change to the website to speed up the process or repurchasing our products.
E.g. We can cut element x and y from the process. We can skip the meeting x and y. We can give person x more autonomy to decide to speed things up. 

And after these impactful actions, the cycle can start over.
