Rabobank is an international financial services provider operating on the basis of cooperative principles. That makes the bank stand out between competitors and gives it a credible base to start some remarkable groundswell initiatives.

Rabobank offers banking, asset management, leasing, insurance and real estate services. Focus is on broad financial services provision in the Netherlands and primarily on the food and agribusiness internationally. Rabobank Group is comprised of independent local Rabobanks plus Rabobank Nederland, their umbrella organisation, and a number of specialist subsidiaries. Overall, Rabobank Group has approximately 59,400 employees (in FTEs), who serve about 10 million customers in 48 countries.

During my time at Boondoggle Amsterdam and Boondoggle Leuven, I was involved in three main projects:

Gamification and nudge mechanisms in banking

What does the future of online banking look like? And how can we use smart persuasion design and nudge techniques to help consumer make better financial decisions? Those where the two main questions as a starting point for a design exploration for Rabobank online banking.

This project concerned the bank’s most important touchpoint with their clients. The online web banking environment with more than 1,500,000 active users.

The challenge was to set some ambition for the future. By developing a complete communication and banking platform that could not only communicate, but offered clients to optimize their own banking environment with online tools and would make relevant cross product selling possible.

This vision was presented in artist impressions, storyboards and customer journeys and were used on board level within the bank.

The future of banking

What is the future of banking? How will mobile, location and virtual payment systems influence consumer behavior? What are new potential business models? What are existing best practices when it comes to involving consumers in a bank’s core business?

We set out to do a thorough exploration of what the future of banking would look like.

This vision was presented in artist impressions, storyboards and customer journeys and were used on board level within the bank.

Innovations in banking

For the Rabobank communications, marketing and innovation teams, we did several inspiration sessions, highlighting innovative best practices.

During 3-hour workshops, we stimulated the teams to formulate roadmaps, quick wins and wants, using the KANO model and other comprehensive frameworks.
