Story.
I often wake up between 03:00 and 05:00. When I stay in hotels, that means spending the first part of the day in a quiet room, lobby or business centre.
Coffee is not always easy at that hour.
A hotel in Munich once refused to serve me one before breakfast opened at 06:30. Not one minute earlier.
At citizenM Rotterdam, I asked a host for coffee at 04:00. He agreed immediately.
Then he added: because you are the first guest of the day, it is free.
The coffee cost almost nothing. The sentence turned it into a story I still remember years later.
What they did.
The host did not point to opening hours or call a manager. He made the coffee.
Then he gave the gesture a reason. Not a discount, not a loyalty perk. A small title: first guest of the day.
Why it works.
A free coffee without a reason is a discount. A free coffee with a reason is a moment.
The reason tells the guest that someone noticed them. It also makes the gesture easy to retell. Hotels have similar products, rooms and processes. The difference often sits in small gestures like this one.
The contrast helped too. One hotel held on to a rule. The other found a reason to break it in the guest’s favour.
Try it yourself.
Give frontline staff permission to spot these moments and a small budget to act on them.
The first guest. Someone arriving after a difficult journey. A child ordering for the first time. The trigger can be simple.
The gesture should not feel like a promotion. It should feel like someone noticed.
Pick one trigger, like the first guest of the day, and agree with your team on one small gesture to mark it. Start tomorrow.
