Friends,
Member update: We've lost some newsletter subscribers. We dropped from 61,823 members to 55,787. I purposely removed 6,036 people that hadn't opened the last four newsletters.
Why? Occasionally I offer small quantities of products, early access to beta software, etc. I'd rather save these offers for our dedicated readers, while also sparing their inbox from email never read.
Industry average open rates for email newsletters is 15.6%. At the time of this email, our open rate is right at 70%. I'd like to continue to push that higher. Thanks for being one of our loyal subscribers.
No podcast this month, but as always, great stories. Enjoy this issue!

Why it works.

The more a company knows about you, the less it should bother you. Most do the opposite. Same idea as Netflix cancelling members who stopped watching.

The series

Automagic: nine automated mails done right.

  1. An order mail that knows it is software.
  2. A shipping mail with a story.
  3. A person, the day after you sign up.
  4. A newsletter that unsubscribes you.
  5. An autoreply that manages expectations.
  6. An autoresponder that says no, kindly.
  7. A personal assistant that asks first.
  8. A cold sales mail with a bet.
  9. A no that still sounds like a yes.
